The science of mysticism

Written by Gnostic Instructor

ImageWe speak that we do know, and testify that we have seen; and ye receive not our witness. - John 3:11

Throughout the history of humanity, there have been individuals whose mission it was to act as guiding lights within the darkness of the ignorance and hatreds of humanity. These individuals have been called saviors, prophets, masters, magicians, bodhisattvas, Buddhas, arhats, and sons of man… With wise words, miracles, and esoteric written texts, these men and women have brought about changes to advance human spirituality.

I. Mysticism

We read in books that these holy individuals undertake various missions and have belonged to different eras, regions, religions, sects, secret societies, and esoteric orders; yet, there is a common and exact doctrine that is inherent within all of their works. As if there were a cosmic plan, in all races and eras, to send these enlightened messengers to work for specific missions in regards to the evolution of humanity. In his book, “Orders of the Quest,” Manly P. Hall states:

There is an incontrovertible mass of evidence indicating the existence of initiated philosophers possessing a superior knowledge of divine and natural laws. There is also sufficient proof that these initiates were the agents of a World Fraternity or Brotherhood of Adepts that has existed from the most remote time. This overfraternity has been called the Philosophic Empire, the Great School, the College of the Holy Spirit, and the Invisible Government of the World. References to this sovereign body of “the ancient ones of the earth” occur in the sacred writings, the philosophical literature, and the mystical traditions of all races and nations of mankind.

Image

…[we] have referred to the stream of the secret doctrine as Humanism. The term is not used in its popular sense, but to describe the grand program of the Mystery Schools for the emancipation of man from bondage to ignorance, superstition, and fear.

To begin the said emancipation, the Gnostic student seeks to enhance and develop the intuitive principle within, that force that causes one to seek for the Truth, that principle which causes us to seek to know ourselves. That principle is the consciousness inside the individual, that which is the reason and cause for all mystical experience. The consciousness is the means or material used in all acts of Theurgy, mysticism or white magic. Eliphas Levi once wrote, “Magic is the divine in man, consisting of science in union with faith.”

The true Theurgist, the mystic or prophet, is the aspect of divinity within the individual human, it is the Inner Being, the Innermost. It is the particular Inner Being of an initiate which expresses itself through the words and actions of the initiate by means of the essence or causal principle. We do not say that any individual personality is divine, no, as Samael states, “The Theurgist is more within, deeper, more profound.” (Logos Mantram Theurgy) It is not, as many fanatics believe, the personality of a saint that is divine, it is the divine within that saint that is holy. And it is here that the initiates of the Universal Lodge find real magic. Devoid of the guidance of the divine within, one can only find egotism, and thus all magic will turn black as it degenerates into darkness. Sadly this is happening to many of the psuedo-esoteric orders and religions of modern humanity. Therefore, for one to delve into the esoteric or occult mysteries, one must seek union and guidance solely from the “Lord God of Truth Within.” And this is the true meaning of Religion, as the word itself comes from the Latin Religare, which means “to unite (with the divine).” We see the same meaning in the Sanskrit word Yoga (see the book entitled “The Mysteries of the Fire – Kundalini Yoga” by Samael Aun Weor), which is the same process under the light of eastern mysticism.

Therefore, the students of Gnosticism do not follow any Gurus or teachers, save for the inner Guru, by cultivating the relationship between themselves with the divine. The true teachings of the Masters, which have come to serve humanity, are meant only to give us the means to nurture this relationship. Eliphas Levi wrote in “The Paradoxes of the Highest Science”:

Religion is Magic sanctioned by authority.

The Wise understand what true religion is—the eternal necessity that is. For debased souls, religion is a yoke imposed by the vagaries of fear and the follies of hope. For exalted souls, religion is a force, springing from an intensified love of God and humanity.

II. Science

For thousands of years, Gnosticism has offered keys to unlock the mysteries that lay deeply hidden within the soul and it has promised one thing: objective knowledge. We do not ask the students to believe in a particular dogma.

“ Why believe when you could know? ”

Why believe when you could know? That is why it is said that the Innermost Self-realization of the Being is our goal, but science is our method. We must be critical, attentive and determined if we are to reach such a lofty goal. Therefore, there are three esoteric sciences which have been studied since the dawn of humanity which offer the means to our goal.

A. Psychology

Image“That children do not know the reason of their desires, all the learned teachers and instructors agree. But that grownups too stumble like children on this earth, not knowing whence they come or whither they go, acting as little according to true purposes, being ruled by cakes and birch rods, no one likes to believe; yet to me it seems quite obvious.

Let us watch man in his limited sphere and see how impressions affect him, how he is obsessed by ideas, until finally growing passion robs him of any possible calmness of mind and becomes his ruin.” –Johannes von Goethe (excerpts from “The Sorrows of Young Werther”)

The term psychology is a compound word coming from the Greek words Psyche (soul) and Logos (verb). Modern psychology only goes so far as to study the mind and the egotistical self. Gnosticism delves deeply into the esoteric aspect of psychology, seeking to incorporate the understanding of the spirit and the soul in relation to the mind and the various egos.

esoteric: (Gr.) Hidden, secret. From the Greek esotericos, “inner,” concealed. (From H.P. Blavatsky’s “The Theosophical Glossary.”)

Image Esoteric psychology seeks to understand and eliminate the cause of suffering just as the Buddha Shakyamuni taught over 2500 years ago. In relation to this aspect of psychology, the Buddha gave to his disciples the four noble truths. In brief, the first noble truth is that all ego-centric life is suffering. The second noble truth is that desire is the cause of all suffering. The third noble truth is that to eliminate suffering, one must eliminate all desire in oneself. The fourth noble truth says to follow what is called in Buddhism “the Eightfold Path”; these are the ways in which one goes about to eliminate desire and suffering.

Through many births I sought in vain
The builder of this House of Pain.
Now, Builder, thee I plainly see!
This is the last abode for me.
Thy gable’s yoke and rafters broke,
My heart has peace. All lust will cease.

- Buddha Shakyamuni

So in Gnosis, we go further into the soul of the matter. In esoteric psychology, we must understand how the desires and defects of the mind trap and condition the consciousness of the human soul. Therefore, under the light of the teachings of Samael Aun Weor, we study three main facets of psychology: the ego, the essence, and the personality.

EGO (Latin for “I”): These are the various vices, errors, wants, desires, conditionings, mechanicities, etc. in one’s mind, heart, and actions. By observing ourselves, we will see in a clear and obvious manner, that we have many different desires, often conflicting and contradicting each other, without any rhyme or reason. It is said that we have many thousands of these egos that dominate our mind, feelings and actions at a given moment. These are the elements in our psyche that cause us to identify with a particular self-gratifying sensation, these make up the false identity. These are the elements that lead to all the suffering of humanity. These elements, called psychic aggregates by the Tibetans, condition the human soul by trapping the essence or causal principle in the many deluded states of desire. The ego is a multiplicity, its name is legion.

PERSONALITY (from Latin Persona, which means mask): This is the visible aspect of one’s character, as it impresses others. This is formed from the time of birth to the age of seven. It has three major influences that are studied in the Gnostic curriculum. Our personality can give us the keys to understanding our psychological make-up and ourselves. Yet the personality is just a mask, it can be worn by the various egos or it can be the passive instrument for the Innermost to express itself in the world.

ESSENCE: This is the intelligence of one’s own Inner Being, inside the mind, heart and body. This is what we can call the Consciousness, Buddha nature, Buddhata etc. The Innermost has two souls, one divine and the other human; these three aspects make up our own particular individual Monad. The Innermost who is the aspect of the androgynous internal spirit, the Inner God, sends the essence of the human soul into the world in order to create. It does so, so as to acquire more knowledge in regards to the mysteries of nature. Thus, with divine intelligence, the Monad sends the essence into the world, our own psychological-physical world: mental, emotional/astral, vital and physical bodies. These bodies, intended to be vehicles of the cosmic intelligence of the Innermost (Monad), become identified and the mind becomes lost in the world, due to the identification with the desire for physical sensation. Thus, we must understand the egos, how they use our personality and how they trap the essence causing us to remain trapped in the base and superficial level of being that is so common and natural in this day and age. Yet it is only through re-connecting oneself to the essence that such a mission could be possible, for an ego cannot work on an ego, suffering only perpetuates more suffering. Therefore, the essence is what the students of Gnosticism seek to contact; it is only experienced in the moment, bringing knowledge, happiness and understanding. It is through the essence that the student can experience Gnosis (an intuitive and direct knowing), it can be experienced in different mystical states and various dimensions, as the essence is multi-dimensional.

2. Alchemy:

Alchemy was included in the curriculum of the College of Angels, which Adam attended in Paradise before the Fall. Moses and Aaron were instructed in the mystery of transmutation by God himself, and became great adepts in the secrets of the Stone. When the angels descended to take wives from among the daughters of men, as recorded in the Book of Enoch, they revealed to mortals the precious chemistry for the regeneration of elements. – Manly P. Hall (Orders of the Great Work)

Image This ancient metallurgical science implies to us the notions of those who attempted to transmute base metals into gold. The word Alchemy is said to come from ancient Egypt (the land of Kem or Chem) and is a compound word containing Al, from the Arabic Allah, and kimia, a Greek term meaning “to fuse or cast a metal. Thus the true intention of Alchemy is “to fuse with God.” Here we should also understand that EL (Hebrew for God) and El[o]ah (Hebrew for Goddess) is analogous to the Arabic word Allah.

This science is not one that can be taken purely at face value. The flamboyant alchemical instruments in the laboratories of the middle ages were merely used as symbolic tools to teach a secret doctrine to the initiated, so that it would not be destroyed- by the inquisition. The Keepers of the Great Arcanum have jealously guarded this science. This is the science of creation and perfection. Remember when Jesus said, “With patience ye shall possess thy soul.” And truly it is patience that one needs to perform the Magnum Opus, the Great Work. Symbolically speaking, this science is the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil.

Will you with me tomorrow be content,

Faithfully to receive the Blessed Sacrament,

Upon the Oath that I shall here give,

For neither gold, nor silver, so long as you live;

Neither for love you bear toward your kin,

Nor yet to no great man, preferment to win,

That you disclose the secret I shall you teach,

Neither by writing, nor by swift speech,

But only to him, which you can be sure,

Has always searched after the secrets of Nature,

To him you may reveal the secrets of this art,

Under the cover of philosophy, before the world, you depart.

- From the manuscript “Theatrum Chemicum Britannicum”

3. Kabbalah:

This word comes from the Hebrew word Kibel, which means “to receive.” This reception, the ancient Hebrew Rabbis would say, refers to the reception of a hidden doctrine. While the masses would follow the precepts of exoteric religion and study the body of the doctrine, the Bible, Torah or Tanakh, these books were only supplemental to the secret doctrine studied by the Kabalistic Rabbis. To the Rabbis, the cryptic symbolism within the books the “Zohar” and the “Talmud” was the body of the secret doctrine. Gnosticism has unveiled this most valuable tradition in the light of esotericism.

exoteric: (Gr.) Outward, public; the opposite of esoteric or hidden. (From H.P. Blavatsky’s “The Theosophical Glossary.”)

Image Kabbalah is based upon the symbol called in Hebrew Otz Chiim or The Tree of Life. This symbol shows all the different aspects of the universe in all its dimensions in relation to the human, with the different aspects of the soul in relation to divinity. It shows the creation of the cosmos, the creation of individual life, and the creation of the soul. It shows the way every cosmic unit receives and is sustained by cosmic forces. This is the true Kabbalistic reception . In every ancient religion there is a symbolic “Tree of Life.” It is in the midst of Eden within the Judeo-Christian traditions, it is the Bodhi Tree of the Buddha Shakyamuni, it is symbolized by the Katums of the Popul Vuh of the Mayans, and the Oak Tree of the Nordic mysteries. Students are urged to read such books as Mystical Qabalah by Dion Fortune, Tarot and Kabbalah by Samael Aun Weor, and Transcendental Magic by Eliphas Levi to understand the in depth symbolical structures of Kabbalah. To have a clear understanding of the Tree of Life, in its basic applications, one can unlock the doors of the mysteries of the ages.

It [the Tree of Life] is a glyph, that is to say a composite symbol, which is intended to represent the cosmos in its entirety and the soul of man as related thereto; and the more we study it, the more we see that it is an amazingly adequate representation; we use it as the engineer or the mathematician uses his sliding-rule, to scan and calculate the intricacies of existence, visible and invisible, in external nature or the hidden depth of the soul. – Dion Fortune (Mystical Qabalah ch 6)

Therefore, the students of our institutions are urged to study these three sciences and how they are applied to all of the ancient religions. We do not exclude any religion, because we believe that the doctrine of the synthesis is the most accurate, objective, all encompassing and tolerant. Understand these three sciences and the three sciences will help you to understand yourself spiritually and psychologically. These sciences should be studied and applied. For what is science without experimentation, theories, and facts?

III. Initiation

“Initiation is life itself, lived intensely, with rectitude and with love.” – Samael Aun Weor

Initiation is a very important aspect of Gnosticism. The Initiation process reflects the cosmos, its order, and the laws of the universe within the “lodge.” We do not give grades and degrees to the students of our institutions, like many initiatory schools; that is not necessary. The initiations are received by the soul of the student in the temples that exist in the higher dimensions of nature. The true lodge, orders, and temples exist within the astral plane, and it is in the astral plane that the inner orders meet. The Gnostic student must become proficient in the arts of meditation and astral travel to be able to attend such meetings.

Image

Initiations are gained by the merits of the heart. The initiation expresses the evolution and development of the consciousness and the soul. To achieve these initiations, one must learn to conquer oneself and to purify the soul. It is the Innermost who gives the initiations. This purification is achieved through the comprehension and elimination of the undesirable elements within the psyche, those psychic aggregates that were referred to in the section of this leaflet entitled Psychology.

Verily, there are three factors that lead to the true initiation, which we may call here, the Revolution of the Consciousness or the Awakening of the Consciousness. These three factors are as follows:

1. Mystical (Alchemical) Birth: This type of birth is in relation to the forging of one’s own soul, see the section in this leaflet entitled Alchemy. Let us reflect upon the words of Jesus when he spoke to the famous Pharisee Nicodemus:

ImageVerily, verily I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Marvel not that I say unto thee, Ye must be born again. The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit. - John 3:5-8

Thus, Jesus spoke this symbolism for those who have the ear to hear. This is not, as many people think, to be taken literally, but to be understood on a deeper esoteric level. And He explains that in the words he speaks there is deep symbolism, not to be taken at face value:

We speak that we do know, and testify that we have seen; and ye receive not our witness. - John 3:11

2. Mystical (Psychological) Death: This refers to the dying of one’s egos or psychological I’s. This is the path that the serious Gnostic student takes to pay the Karma that one owes and to crucify one’s own desires, defects, and vices. By defects and vices, we are emphatically referring to those defects that can be called Anger, Pride, Envy, Greed, Gluttony, Lust and Laziness. We seek purification through comprehending our defects through the application of self-observation and meditation as our tools. It is only after comprehending a certain defect that it can be eliminated. All of the suffering of the world is caused by these defects and each of these defects has its corresponding selfish desires. The world and all of its problems is just a sum total of all the individuals who carry the defects within. Therefore, we must seek to change ourselves and thereby make a true revolution.

3. Sacrifice for Humanity: This factor is seen in the works of the great avatars and what they have done for humanity. Those who have given their life for suffering humanity, to give the teachings in different epochs, races and religions have shown us how to sacrifice for humanity. We read about many great Masters who gave their life for suffering humanity and received martyrdom in return. Sacrifice is to give without the desire to receive, and it is to give consciously. If we give money to a poor fellow, and he in turn spends that money on an unhealthy habit that harms him and humanity, how is that a conscious sacrifice? We must be wise and not careless in our actions. The road to the abyss is paved with good intentions. We must help in the way that best suits the individual and humanity. Therefore it is written, “Love is the Law, but conscious Love.”

It takes strength to be certain,
It takes courage to have doubt.

What’s your time worth?

There are only two things you can do with your time: spend it or invest it.

Think about it… you and I can spend our money and we will always get more. However, if you spend your time, it’s gone forever. Consequently, time is more valuable than money. Current studies in the sales profession tell us that the average sales person has 4 hours per day of productivity. But the key word here is “productivity.”

How easy is it to whittle our time away on personal calls, errands, meetings, long lunches or a myriad of other time stealers and find that the day is gone? Entrepreneurial thinkers value their time… they know what they are worth and are continuously cautious about how they utilize this precious asset.

One of the most common downfalls I observe with would-be achievers is that they want to be six-figure income earners but they are constantly SPENDING their time on $10-per-hour activities. This kind of behavior is putting them on hot rails to failure and disappointment. In other words, their goal is never going to be achieved.

As an entrepreneurial thinker, you must know what you are worth and continually ask yourself, “Is activity going to give me a return on my time equal to or greater than my hourly worth?” Here’s an exercise that I have my personal coaching clients complete:

  1. Take your annual financial goal (not what you are currently earning) and divide it by the number of months that you work per year. This may not necessarily be what you ARE working now but rather what you WANT to be working.
  2. Now divide that figure by the number of weeks you want to work per month… the number of days you want to work per week… and finally the number of hours you want to work per day. You now have your worth per hour based upon where you are headed versus where you are.

This process will put into perspective how much EVERY HOUR is worth. Do you really want to lose that money on unproductive activities?

Cell phones may cause hearing loss

Long-time mobile phone users who talk more than an hour a day on the devices may be may be more likely to have high-frequency hearing loss, researchers say.”Our intention is not to scare the public,” says Naresh K. Panda, MS, DNB, chairman of the department of ear, nose, and throat at the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research in Chandigarh, India, and researcher for the study.  The study, he tells WebMD, is preliminary and small. “We need to study a larger number of patients.”

He presented the findings Wednesday at the annual meeting of the American Academy of Otolaryngology — Head and Neck Surgery in Washington.

His team found that people who had talked on cell phones for more than four years and those who talked more than an hour daily were more likely to have these high-frequency losses. These losses can make it difficult to hear consonants such as s, f, t and z, making it hard to understand words.

But another hearing expert familiar with the study says there is as yet no cause for alarm.

Hearing Loss Study

Panda and his colleagues evaluated 100 people, aged 18 to 45, who had used mobile phones for at least a year, dividing them into three groups according to length of use. One group of 35 had used phones for one to two years; another group of 35 had used them for two to four years, and a group of 30 had used them for more than four years.

“We asked them if they had been using the phones less than 60 minutes or more than 60 minutes per day,” Panda tells WebMD. They compared the phone users with 50 people who had never used cell phones and served as a control group. The study was conducted in India.

Those who used the mobile phones for more than four years had more hearing loss in high-frequency ranges in their right ear, the ear most held the phone to, than those who used the mobile phone for one to two years.

“When we compared high-frequency thresholds (the level at which the sound is first detected) between the one- to two-year [users] and more than four years; there was a significant difference in the thresholds between these two groups,” he says.

One- to two-year users had a 16.48 decibel loss in the high-frequency range, he says, while those who used the phones more than four years had a 24.54 decibel loss.

That decrease in hearing over a relatively brief period may not be noticeable to mobile phone users but would be of concern to a hearing expert, says Andy Vermiglio, AuD, a research audiologist at House Ear Institute in Los Angeles.

Mobile phone users who had symptoms such as a warm sensation, fullness in the ears, or ringing were more likely to have the high-frequency hearing loss, Panda also says.

Long-term mobile phone use may result in inner ear damage, Panda speculates. And symptoms such as ear warmth or fullness could be early warning signs of that damage.

Second Opinion

The research is too preliminary to warrant alarm, says Chester Griffiths, MD, chairman of the surgery department at Santa Monica — UCLA Medical Center and Orthopaedic Hospital and assistant clinical professor at the David Geffen School of Medicine at the University of California Los Angeles. He was not involved in the study but reviewed the findings for WebMD.

“Based on this study, I would not advise any change at the point, but I would caution people if they have any symptoms to stop using a cell phone or to reduce use.”

Cell Phone Industry Responds

Joe Farren, a spokesman for CTIA — the Wireless Association, the industry organization for the cellular industry, tells WebMD he has not reviewed the new study closely so he can’t comment directly on the findings.

But he tells WebMD that previous research has not found a link between cell phone use and harmful health effects.

“There have been numerous studies conducted around the globe that have been peer-reviewed and published in leading scientific journals that show no association between wireless usage and adverse health effects,” Farren says.

The subjects in the Indian study used GSM mobile phones. Farren says U.S. mobile phone users have phones that use the GSM platform but also other platforms.

Panda plans to continue his research. Meanwhile, his advice to preserve hearing: “Use cell phones when absolutely necessary.

“Get flat abs” diet

You can’t down 3,000 calories a day and expect to lose your belly, but calories aren’t the entire story. Certain foods seem to pack pounds on the midsection: Last fall, experts from the ongoing Framingham Nutrition Studies reported that women who ate almost 400 fewer daily calories but chose the least nutritious foods had a 2 1/2 times higher risk of abdominal obesity than those who ate that much more but made better choices. They also had dramatically higher risk of such serious health issues as type 2 diabetes and heart attacks, says Barbara Millen, DPH, the study’s director of nutritional research. You don’t have to “diet”: Just fold these strategies into your life and watch ab flab pare down.

1. Eat fruits and vegetables. Especially orange ones. Women trimmed their waists by replacing refined grains like white bread and simple or added sugar with carbs from fruits and vegetables, according to the latest review from Copenhagen University Hospital.

Besides packing in the fiber, which keeps you feeling full longer, researchers suspect it’s the rich antioxidants, such as vitamin C and beta-carotene, that ward off ab fat. Carrots, cantaloupe, squash, and peaches are great sources of beta-carotene, while oranges, berries, and kiwi provide a good dose of C. To keep calories down, pick veggies, like bell peppers, before fruits, and choose fruits over juice.

2. Consume one pack of AGEL FIT everyday. This great tasting gel can help play a role in this frustrating struggle, without the harmful effects of stimulants. The active ingredient in Agel FIT is a well studied, patent pending form of HCA (hydroxycitric acid), called Super CitriMax™. It comes from the extract of the fruit and rind of Garcinia combogia, and it has been shown in clinical trials to decrease body weight by reducing appetite and inhibiting fat synthesis without stimulating the central nervous system. There are other products on the market that use HCA for weight management, but not all of them contain Super CitriMax™. What makes this form of HCA so good is that it is bound to calcium and potassium, which maximizes its solubility, thereby, increasing its bioavailability. Add that to the fact that it is now suspended in a gel formulation and we have the makings of an awesome weight management aid.

3. Get more selenium. This cancer-fighting mineral is also linked to lower rates of abdominal obesity, according to a survey of more than 8,000 Americans. People with low blood levels of selenium and other antioxidants had bigger waistlines than those with higher levels.

Selenium is found in many foods, but it can be hard to know if you’re getting the recommended 55 mcg a day because amounts vary based on the soil in which food is grown and the feed livestock consume. To meet your requirement, try a supplement or eat a varied diet. Also, opt for foods grown in different areas: such as grains from the Midwest, Vermont cheeses, and nuts from California.

4. Add some protein. Eating more protein keeps you full and boosts energy, which leads to overall weight loss and – for those over 40 –  reduced ab fat in particular, according to findings from Skidmore College and Copenhagen University Hospital.

But studies show that eating high amounts of protein may stress the kidneys as they work to eliminate the excess, which can also cause calcium loss. Aim to get 25% of your calories from protein (if you eat 2,000 calories a day, that’s 500 from protein). Just make lean choices such as low-fat yogurt, fat-free milk, fish, and poultry. Nuts are another great source but can be high in calories: Have just five 1-ounce servings a week (an ounce is about 24 almonds, 18 cashews, or 35 peanuts).

5. Drink a glass of wine a day. Don’t start drinking wine just to fight ab fat, but if you enjoy a glass with dinner, it’s a great benefit. Some studies even suggest that light to moderate drinking protects against female midsection weight gain, compared with teetotaling. Based on a review of data collected by the National Center for Health Statistics, one 4-ounce glass of red or white wine most days a week (up to 20 a month) seems to be best.

More, however, is not better. That extra glass of wine – or even just one cocktail – adds inches, found the Copenhagen study, while other research implicates beer in the proverbial “beer belly.”

6. Eat the right fats. Research from Spain shows it’s easier to stay slim eating monounsaturated fats (such as olive oil) and omega-3s (found mostly in fish but also in flaxseed and walnut oils and tofu), while omega-6 fats (prevalent in cereals, corn oil, baked goods, and eggs) caused ab fat to pile on.

Fats that should be eliminated completely: trans fats, which have no nutritional value and are mostly found in calorie-dense baked goods and chips. In a Wake Forest University study, monkeys eating a typical American diet for 6 years gained the human equivalent of 10 pounds more when the fat they ate was all trans fat, compared with those eating monounsaturated fat. Worse, “30% more fat was added in the abdominal region, and they had early signs of diabetes,” says researcher Kylie Kavanagh, DVM.

Agel Testimonial

Let me tell you a little story about my AGEL business.

This morning I woke up, ate breakfast, sat down to my desk and checked my back office. There were three new sign-ups while I was snoring. One each in Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Poland.

The volume from those sign-ups rolled up almost 70 levels to me and I made money. My group’s autoship numbers are many thousands each month which I also get residual on. So the reality is, there isn’t a day when I don’t make money. I make money when I work and I make money when I don’t work. That is the beauty of what we all can accomplish in this business.

What continually amazes me are the people who get in just about “any” network marketing enterprise, bat the business around like a cat with a toy, and then quit saying this doesn’t work. The the REAL IRONY is that they go back to their 9-5 job which has kept them broke for years (in some cases decades) and will slave away for $12 bucks an hour trading precious life for a paycheck that merely services the debt on their credit cards.

All that when they can have a truly fantastic lifestyle if they only follow the “proven” system we have put in place.

But fear of rejection and/or the approval of all the naysayers in their lives are more times than not the real deciding factors in their success. They never stop to realize that if they died tomorrow, very few people outside of immediate family will ever really care.

When they don’t have enough money to pay the mortgage, will the naysayers be there to lend them the money…. let me answer for you…. NO

  • If you get sick, will the naysayers pay your bills?…..NO
  • If you want to send your kids to private school, will the naysayers help you with tuition??……NO
  • If something “God forbid” happens to you will the naysayers provide your family with a transferrable income stream?…..NO
  • If a gourmet dinner to you is ALPO when you retire will the naysayers be there to buy you McDonald’s gift certificates?….NO

Always Remember what my mother “Misery Loves Company” and the naysayers will NEVER support you because they don’t want to you what they cannot have themselves because they are either too thick headed to see the same opportunity as you, of they merely refuse to leave their comfort zones.

Then why on earth do we care what they say?… Why do “WE” seek approval from those who will never amount to a fraction of what we are capable of?

It has and always will be my goal to get every person on our team to Diamond. And nothing would make me happier than to have all of them pass me in rank and leave me in the dust.

But to do that we need to leave the naysayers in the dust first.

So, the truth is, there’s not one path. The truth is, there’s not only one right path. The truth is, all paths can be made to be the right path. The truth is, that every individual has a different path. And that different path that every individual is launching incrementally—and amending constantly—that true path is known by Source and is guided by Source if you will pay attention to the way you feel.

Single Footstep

As a single footstep

will not make a path on the earth,

so a single thought will not

make a pathway in the mind.

To make a deep physical path,

we walk ceaselessly again and again.

To make a deep mental path,

we must think over and over the kind of thoughts

we wish to dominate our lives.

Ensure a Strong Future for Forests

Forests provide habitat for more than half of all species living on land, help filter pollutants out of the air and water, and prevent soil erosion. They also play a major role in regulating global temperatures by absorbing heat-trapping carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and storing it in their cell walls. Unfortunately, the global benefits provided by trees are threatened by deforestation.

Earth loses more than 18 million acres of forestland every year—an area larger than Ireland—according to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). When trees are cleared, their stored carbon is released back into the atmosphere. As a result, tropical deforestation is responsible for about 20 percent of total annual global warming emissions, making it second only to fossil fuels in terms of climate impact.

The best way to reduce emissions from tropical deforestation is to help ensure these trees are not cut down in the first place. Your purchasing decisions can play a role in this effort:

  • Wood: When buying wood products, look for labels that indicate the wood comes from sustainably managed forests. There are several forest certification programs in place worldwide; see the related links for a description and comparison of each. For home improvement projects, you can avoid new wood products altogether by using reclaimed wood for floors and wood-free materials (such as composite resin boards) for decks or play areas.

  • Coffee: Make your daily cup o’ joe using shade-grown coffee beans, which are grown under a forest canopy. In addition to supporting the preservation of forestlands, shade-grown coffee requires less fertilizer and pesticides to grow compared with coffee grown under full sun.

  • Paper: While most U.S. papers are not made from tropical woods, reducing overall demand for virgin paper can have a global impact. You can support forest-friendly paper by buying paper made from sustainably harvested timber, a high percentage of post-consumer recycled content, or wood-free fibers such as kenaf.

Planting trees, while not a substitute for deforestation, can provide important climate benefits, especially in urban areas. In addition to absorbing carbon from the atmosphere, trees cool the air by providing shade and transpiring water from their leaves, which help reduce air conditioner use (and subsequent emissions from electricity production) during the summer months.

The miror of Zen

There is only one thing, from the very beginning, infinitely bright and mysterious by nature.

It was never born, and it never dies. It cannot be described or given a name.

What is this “one thing?”

An eminent teacher wrote,

Even before the ancient Buddhas were born,

One thing was already perfectly complete.

Even Shakyamuni Buddha could not understand it.

How could he transmit it to Mahakasyapa?

There is one “thing” that is never born, and never dies. For this reason it cannot be named in any way, or expressed, or depicted.

The Sixth Patriarch once addressed the assembly thus: “I have something that has no name and no form. Do any of you see it?” Zen Master Shen-hui immediately replied, “It is the essence of all Buddhas, and also my buddha-nature.” Due to this answer, Shen-hui cannot be considered a legitimate heir and descendant of the Sixth Patriarch.

Zen Master Nan-yueh came from Mount Seung Sahn to see the Sixth Patriarch, who asked, “What is it that comes here like this?” Nan-yueh was completely stuck, and could not answer anything. After eight years of practice, he finally said, “If you even call this a “thing” it is not correct.”

This answer is why Nan-yueh thus became the premier Dharma heir and successor of the Sixth Patriarch.

The appearance of all Buddhas and Patriarchs in this world can be likened to waves arising suddenly on a windless ocean.

The word Buddha refers to Shakyamuni Buddha, and Patriarch refers to the Venerable Mahakasyapa. Their coming into the world means that, out of great kindness and great compassion, they appeared in order to save all sentient beings from suffering.

In view of the “one thing,” however, everyone’s original nature is already complete, just as it is. Why have we come to depend on others, always wanting to dress up this simple matter with more powder and rouge? Therefore, their coming into this world can be viewed in just the same way you would if waves were to somehow arise on a sea without wind.

All of this is just to say that when you correctly attain your original nature, both Buddhas and Patriarchs are no longer of any use to you.

Yet, dharma has many depths of meaning, and people have different capacities to receive it. Therefore it is necessary to adopt different kinds of skillful means.

Dharma refers to the one thing, and people refers to all sentient beings. Dharma has two aspects: it never changes, and yet it also follows conditions, cause and effect.  People also have two kinds of capacity: they always have the ability to awaken to themselves in an instant, where there is constant need to refine themselves through gradual practices as well. Therefore it is necessary to adopt different kinds of skillful means employing words and speech.

Sentient beings’ original nature is already complete, but they do not open their wisdom eye, and thus, of their own free will, fall into the cycle of rebirth. Without the gleaming sword of Wisdom transcending worldly matters, who could cut through the heavy veil of ignorance? Owing to the Buddha’s great kindness and compassion, we are enabled to cross the ocean of suffering and arrive on the other side.

You may call it “mind,” or “Buddha,” or “sentient being.” Yet you should neither become attached to the names nor make distinctions or understanding. The essence of things is just-like-this. If even one thought appears, that is already a mistake.

Sutra teachings rely on words such as these three names (mind, Buddha, sentient being) to express the one thing.  Zen meditation teaches that you must not become attached to any words or speech.

Picking it up or putting it down; creating or destroying. These are the actions of a Free Person who is without any hindrance.

The selection above demonstrates how Buddhas and Patriarchs have freely used myriad expedient means to convey their teachings.

Gatha

            It’s like sweet rain falling after a long drought;

Like encountering an old friend in a faraway,

                               foreign land.

The Zen meditation tradition descends from the three situations where the Buddha transmitted his insight wordlessly from mind to mind. The Sutra tradition derives from the occasions of the Buddha’s spoken teachings, delivered throughout his life. Therefore it can be said that Zen is the  Buddha’s mind, while the sutras are Buddha’s words.

The tradition regarding the Buddha’s words holds that he taught his disciples for forty nine years. This tradition is sometimes viewed with regard to five kinds of teaching: the teachings that lead to good rebirth in human or celestial form; the Hinayana teaching; the Mahayana teaching; the teaching of Sudden Enlightenment; and the complete teaching on the Bodhisattva Way. The Buddha’s cousin and faithful attendant, Ananda unleashed this ocean of sutra teachings.

Zen meditation employs the wordless to reveal what is beyond words, whereas sutras rely on words to express what is beyond words. So mind itself is the Zen teaching, and speech is the Sutra teaching. Dharma has but one taste, yet the difference between realizing it and merely understanding it conceptually is as vast as that between heaven and earth.

If you become attached to words and speech, then even the Buddha’s silently raising a flower or Mahakashyapa’s wordless smile will be only another trace of the sutras. However, when you attain the truth within your own mind, even all the base chatter or elegant speech of the mundane world become nothing less than this same “special transmission outside the sutras.”

Dharma has no name, and so it cannot be grasped through words. It has no form, and so it cannot be understood through thinking. The instant you open your mouth to speak it, you have already departed from your original mind. When you lose this original mind, then even the story of Buddha silently lifting a flower overhead and Mahahashyapa wordlessly smiling is, in the end, no better than dead speech to you.

If you attain the truth within your own mind, then even the senseless chitchat in the streets and markets are like the Dharma speech of a great teacher, and even a chirping bird or the wail of an animal express truth. For this very reason, when Zen Master Pao-chi heard the crying of bitter mourning, he awakened to his own mind and danced joyfully!

This teaching expresses the depth and shallowness of the Zen meditation and scriptural traditions, respectively.

My hope is that all practitioners of the Way completely believe in their true self. You should neither lack confidence nor give rise to pride.

Mind is fundamentally equal and the same, and thus there is no real distinction between “ordinary people” and “sages.” Nevertheless there are, in reality, those who wander in darkness and those who have been awakened to their true nature, thus distinguishing “ordinary people” from “sages.” Following the instruction of a teacher, a practitioner may attain, in an instant, his true self, thereby realizing that he is ultimately no different from the Buddha. Hence it is said, “Originally, there is nothing,” which means simply that one must not underestimate oneself, and lack confidence. This is the teaching of “sudden enlightenment.”

Even after attaining some realization, however, one must always strive to cut off lingering mind-habits so that one can be fully transformed from an “ordinary person” into a “sage.” This is the teaching of “gradual cultivation,” emphasizing that we must “polish the mirror from moment to moment.” This is why pride can be such a hindrance. Lacking faith in one’s own nature is the sickness of those attached to scriptural authority, whereas pride is the disease of those who practice Zen meditation.

Abraham message

There will be a time, not so far from now, that you will look back on this phase of your life and instead of condemning it or beating up on it… Instead of blaming or guilting, you will feel appreciation for it, because you will understand that a renewed desire for life was born out of this time period that will bring you to physical heights that you could not have achieved without the contrast that gave birth to this desire.
